Bedford police say a 70-year-old man fell victim to a scam where he was duped out of nearly $30,000.

Last Thursday, the man received an alert on his computer claiming it had been hacked. The alert provided a phone number he believed was from Microsoft.

Upon calling, he was informed that his computers and phones had been hacked and was given another number, which he thought was his bank. The man then took out $28,000, which he believed would go to Microsoft to resolve the problem.

When someone showed up at his house, he gave them the money.

The next day, he reported the incident to police and told them he was still getting calls asking for more money. Police set up a meeting between the victim and the alleged scammer.

When the suspect showed up thinking he was going to get more money, he was arrested.

Jinguan Li, 48, of Brooklyn, was charged with grand larceny by extortion.

The Westchester man’s money has not been recovered.
