Demands are growing to make a busy stretch of road safer in the East Irvington area. Town leaders are calling on the state Department of Transportation to step in and help.

More than three dozen letters were sent to the Town of Greenburgh's supervisor, expressing dire concerns for what happens along the Saw Mill Parkway near Mountain Road.

"It's really a major quality of life safety issue," says Town of Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner.

Feiner says the main concern for people living near this intersection is drivers not obeying the stop sign.

Then, there's the tight turnaround on to Mountain Road when cars are speeding by.

"All the time screeching and horns blowing. If you don't get T-boned, you are going to get rear-ended," says a man who lives on Mountain Road.

Troopers with New York State Police are tracking the crash data at this spot for us now.

Some neighbors have ideas of their own when it comes to making things safer. That includes more aggressive signage or putting up a traffic light.

"What we're trying to do is get the state to hire an independent traffic consultant who would take a look at the safety issues and come up with recommendations," says Feiner.

News 12 reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation to see if there are any future plans for this intersection. We have yet to hear back.
