All-terrain vehicles, also known as ATVs, have been spotted driving on public streets in Mahopac.

This follows an incident last week involving an ATV and a dirt bike that fled from police after they say both drivers were operating the vehicles recklessly.

According to a statement from the Town of Carmel Police Department, the 17-year-old driver of the dirt bike was apprehended, and the police are still investigating the identity of the ATV driver.

The statement also read that, "the rider's parent, a 51-year-old female resident of Mahopac, was issued a summons for permitting the unlicensed operation of her 17-year-old son."

Residents of the hamlet spoke with News 12's Lauren Del Valle on the growing problem.

"It's dangerous, you know? They should not be on the roads," said Dawn Jedlecka, the manager at Red Mills Convenience Center.

The only way to get to the store is by driving through the street of Mahopac, which is illegal.

That's because the state says ATVs are prohibited on public highways, unless specifically authorized.

Mahopac resident John Cowan says he's seen various riders over nine times.

"It's been happening a lot more and it's dangerous," said Cowan. It's dangerous for the park with the children. Now they're on the street with no license, no plates, no nothing."

Carmel Police Chief Anthony Hoffmann says they've received over 28 calls in the past two months alone regarding the issue.

He says so far, they've apprehended four people, with only some facing charges and are looking for more.

The department is now finding and following the illegal street riders using drones, which it says is safer for everyone.
