Community mourns retired White Plains firefighter killed in crash

Michael Fitzgerald, a 58-year-old Army veteran, died from his injuries after a crash on the Taconic State Parkway.

A wake was held Monday for a retired White Plains firefighter who was killed in a crash on Thanksgiving.

Michael Fitzgerald, a 58-year-old Army veteran, died from his injuries after a crash on the Taconic State Parkway.
Fitzgerald lived in Fishkill and worked for the White Plains Fire Department for 26 years. He had been retired for five years.

Fitzgerald is remembered by his colleagues as the "ultimate team player" and someone who was always reliable. His loved ones say he cherished being with his family and friends, was an avid sports fan and animal lover.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, siblings, and several extended family members.

A funeral mass for Fitzgerald is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Columbia Church in Hopewell Junction. In lieu of flowers, attendees are asked to donate to the 9/11 Foundation.
