Town of Lewisboro police said eight people with disabilities were sent to the hospital after a bus that they were on was involved in a crash on Route 35 in Cross River.

The chief said the bus belonged to Ability Beyond, an organization that serves people with disabilities.

It crashed while it was headed eastbound on Route 35 in Cross River around 3:46 p.m. Two cars were ahead of it, but the driver didn't realize that they were stopped. So, it ended up clipping the car in front of it, veered off of the road, and hit a tree head on.

Chiara Castellucci said she was working across the street as a mechanic when the accident happened. She said that she also happens to be an EMT and a firefighter, so she ran over to help.

"[I] saw that there was one car, made sure she was OK...Went around to the driver, asked if he was OK. I had him open up the side doors and then I asked him how many people were inside the bus and then we went to work," Castelluci said.

Police said there were eight adults with disabilities on the bus when it crashed. Seven ambulances were called in to transport them to Westchester Medical Center to get treated for their minor injuries.

Tom Adamec also works across the street from the scene of the accident and described the condition of some of the passengers that he saw when he went over to help - just before they left for the hospital.

"You know, from front to back, there was just bloody faces, people in wheelchairs [who were] just concerned for their safety," Adamec said.

The police chief said no charges will be filed against the driver of the severely damaged bus at this time.

News 12 reached out to Ability Beyond for a statement, but has not heard back yet.
