There's frustration and confusion in Newburgh over the suspension of the school's superintendent.

Families expressed disappointment Tuesday night at the school board meeting for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.

They were hoping to learn why the district's superintendent has been suspended. However they say, their questions are going unanswered.

Superintendent Jackielyn Manning-Campbell was suspended last week.

It happened in a 5 to 4 vote by the school board.

It came within days of a near-campus shooting, and a forensic audit that raised concerns about why the Newburgh Enlarged City School District raised taxes.

Leaders with the district have not confirmed why the suspension happened.

During Tuesday's school board meeting, the board president said they have to follow due process and can't share confidential information.

"In regard to the suspension of the superintendent and these proceedings, we are asking for your patience while we navigate this difficult situation," says Christine Bello, who is the school board president with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.

In a previous interview with News 12, the superintendent called this move a 'witch hunt' and said she had no idea what she did wrong.

"They do not seem or appear to give the community any voice in the decisions," says the Rev. Dr. Torrence Robinson, who has family in the school district.

Families and taxpayers say they feel like they are being left in the dark and want transparency from the district.

"I just thought it was ridiculous, a lot of unanswered questions," says Newburgh parent Maggie Welling.

The school board members who voted against the suspension previously told News 12 they were profoundly disappointed by the move.

On Tuesday night, the district's deputy superintendent said she is now running the district.

There's no word on what's next in all of this.

The school board president declined to comment ahead of Tuesday's meeting.
