Civil rights activist Hazel Dukes passed away on March 1 at the age of 92. In honor of her legacy, the town of Ramapo held a proclamation event to venerate the former NAACP New York State Conference president with an honorary day.

The event featured community members and members of the NAACP, who referred to the late activist as, "a force to be reckoned with."

Dr. Dukes dedicated her life to fighting for civil rights, fair housing, voting rights and more.

"The contributions and the sacrifices that Dr. Dukes endured to be able to carry the torch for people of color for the many years that she has been president of the NAACP," said Brendel Logan Charles, deputy town supervisor of the Town of Ramapo.

The Pan-African flag outside of Ramapo Town Hall will remain at half-staff until the end of the week in honor of the late activist.
