Emergency officials are crediting the quick actions of firefighters, and homeowners for preventing a fire from completely destroying a home on Stone House Road in Scarsdale this morning.

According to investigators, the homeowner was exercising in the basement just before 6:30 a.m. when he smelled, then saw smoke.

"The man quickly alerted his wife, three children and the family dog and everyone evacuated safely," said Scarsdale Fire Chief Chris Mytch.

It took crews about 15 minutes to get the fire under control. They were able to contain the fire damage to the basement area, but other floors suffered smoke, heat and water damage.

There's no word yet on the exact cause, but investigators say the fire looks to be accidental.

Fire officials say very often, damage can depend upon how quickly the fire department is notified. And in this case, the homeowners did the right thing by immediately calling 911, said Chief Mytch.

"The most important elements are rapid detections, rapid notification, and rapid intervention. So all three of those components were in place today and a lot of credit goes to the homeowners for that and of course all the firefighters who responded."

Fire officials say unfortunately the family will be displaced for a while due to repairs and clean up.
