Residents start crusade against plastics at senior living community

Residents at a senior living community in Purchase are organizing their neighbors to use less plastic and be more environmentally friendly.
The group of conscious seniors at Broadview started a subcommittee that is dedicated to plastic-use reduction.
Founder Marilyn Heimerdinger said her subcommittee holds demonstrations to teach other seniors and staff members at Broadview about the dangers of plastic waste.
Heimerdinger said their hard work is already starting to pay off.
"We have managed to get rid of all single-use plastic water bottles at Broadview. We now have water in glass and water in cans," Heimerdinger said.
Heimerdinger said the community has also replaced their plastic cups and take-out containers, dedicated a disposable bin for soft plastic bags, and implemented compostable flatware and tableware.
The group is now calling on seniors at other living communities to follow their lead.
