Students at Peekskill High School are being encouraged to leave bookbags at home for the remainder of the school year.

The announcement follows a bookbag search that was conducted at the school on Tuesday after a part of a bullet was discovered on Monday.

"I guess the question is, how did the bullet get inside the school?" parent Richard Khan asks.

While Peekskill police say the investigation is still going on, they add that their response to the school yesterday is tied to a suspicious incident that occurred last week.

It's unclear what that incident is about.

Superintendent Dr. David Mauricio says a staff member at the school alerted security that part of a bullet was found inside the school.

Although police investigated the object and determined it wasn't a complete bullet, the news is shocking parents, like Gary Godbee.

"I wouldn't feel very comfortable about that," Godbee says. "Things are not safe. People are not safe today."

In addition to the police investigation, Dr. Mauricio says administrators worked with security to search the school grounds.

He says they didn't find any evidence that a firearm was at the school.

The incident has parents, like Khan, reflecting on local laws and weapons policies.

"I believe in some form of gun law and definitely no guns in the school," Khan says.

Dr. Mauricio says students and staff members across his district are safe.

He says they also stepped up security and law enforcement presence.
