Affordable, LGBTQ+ affirming senior housing coming to White Plains

Housing that's affordable and affirming for LGBTQ+ seniors is coming to Westchester.
After about 20 years of planning, developers say they are finally approved to build a new affordable housing development for seniors in downtown White Plains.
"Seniors are pressed with fixed incomes and higher expenses in Westchester County, so we're very happy and proud to develop this senior citizen development so that seniors can age gracefully," says HANAC Housing director Richard Ross.
Developers are calling the project the Court Street Development.
They say it will be built in this parking lot located at Court Street and Quarropas Street.
The building will provide 141 affordable apartments for low-income seniors aged 55 and older.
"This housing is for everyone, but we are LGBTQ+ affirming," Ross says.
Developers say the building will also house the new headquarters for The Loft LGBTQ+ Community Center.
"We learned that the biggest need within our community is senior housing. So, through our research and such, we partnered with HANAC and Monadnock, and in partnership with the city, to create this--- what I know is going to be a beautiful development," says The Loft CEO Dante Hudson.
Builders say the development is slated to open in about two or three years.
In the meantime, News 12 asked residents if they're fan of more affordable housing coming to Westchester.
"Fifty-five and older is the best," says White Plains resident Elizabeth Albert.
"They're saying 'affordable homes', but when it's all done and it's ready, the next couple of weeks, boom, you're paying millions of dollars to live in there," says a man in White Plains who didn't want to give his name.
"Respect your elders. [It's] absolutely welcome here," says White Plains resident Eric Yaverbaum.
Developers say information about leasing should be coming out sometime in the future.
