An off-duty Yonkers police officer was taken to Westchester Medical Center Thursday night after being struck by a car.

Police officials say the officer, whose name has not been released, was walking across East Grassy Sprain Road just after 9 p.m.

At that same moment, the driver of a silver car was turning from busy Tuckahoe Road onto East Grassy Sprain Road and struck the officer. Police say the driver stayed on the scene as investigators worked the area, and that there does not appear to be any criminal elements to the accident.

The officer was in stable condition as he was taken to the hospital and is now recovering from his injuries.

News 12's Melanie Palmer spoke with people in the area, and many say the roadway can be dangerous.

Yonkers police officials say they are investigating the incident as an accident.

People who live and work in the area say driving on Tuckahoe Road gets chaotic.

"Always congested," says Yonkers resident Mary McKillop.

They told News 12 they have concerns about safety and would like to see improvements going forward.

"A very busy street, something has to be done," says Elias Koulouris, who lives in Yonkers.
