The investigation continues into what sparked a large fire in Yonkers that tore through several buildings.

The fire happened Friday night on School Street.

Families impacted and neighbors in the area call the destruction and damage heartbreaking.

“Watching people suffering, it hurts. It hurts a lot," says Dilcia Peguero, who lives near where the fire happened.

A total of 37 people have registered for emergency assistance with the Red Cross.

“I lose everything, I think everybody lose everything," said one man whose home was damaged in the fire.

The fire spread to several residential buildings.

“That was a tough one. Heavy fire on arrival, structural failure collapse right from the beginning within two minutes of our arrival," says Yonkers Fire Department Chief Frank Marino.

Fire crews tell News 12 that no one was seriously hurt.

The cause appears to be accidental but is still under investigation, according to the Yonkers Fire Department.

Meanwhile, efforts are happening to help those impacted by the fire.

The Yonkers Police Athletic League is accepting donations for things these families need. That includes many essential items, like personal hygiene products, diapers, bedding and pet food.

Donations can be dropped off at the Yonkers PAL, the address is 127 N. Broadway in Yonkers.
