Veterans and seniors could see property tax breaks as towns weigh exemptions
The Town of Smithtown will hold a public hearing next week on proposed property tax exemptions that could provide significant relief for disabled veterans, other qualifying veterans, and seniors over 65.
Thousands of Long Islanders could soon see relief on their property tax bills.
The Town of Smithtown will hold a public hearing next week on proposed property tax exemptions recently approved by state lawmakers and signed by the governor. If adopted locally, the exemptions would apply to the town portion of property tax bills — which Smithtown officials say accounts for about 11% of most taxpayers’ total bill.
Who Would Qualify?
Under the proposal:
Fully disabled veterans would receive a 100% exemption on town property taxes.
Other qualifying veterans could receive a 25% exemption.
Seniors aged 65 and older could qualify for a 65% exemption.
But Smithtown is not alone in this. Each town, school district and county across Long Island must choose whether to adopt the exemptions individually.
The public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19 at Smithtown Town Hall.
