Mayor Zohran Mamdani is taking a step closer to closing the Rikers Correctional Facility.
The city's first outposted therapeutic housing unit is now open at Bellevue Hospital to serve people in custody who are in need of specialty care.
The mayor is calling the lack of healthcare available within the walls of Rikers unacceptable.
The new 104-bed facility is open on the Bellevue Hospital campus and provides services in areas including oncology, cardiology and neurology.
