In wake of a fatal fire in the city, the Bridgeport Fire Department wants to get the word out about their program that offers smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Chief Lance Edwards says the department will install the alarms to Bridgeport residents for free. One and two-family houses and owner occupied three family homes are eligible for the program.
"We try to get folks to understand the importance of our smoke alarm program, which really should equate to a medical exam because everything is about early detection," he says.
Edwards also cautions people to never use their ovens as a way to heat their homes.
The department says smoke alarms are required to be in every residential building.
For more information, residents can call 203-335-8835.
Since the program began in 2005, more than 50,000 smoke alarms have been installed throughout the city.
