New Jersey invests $7.3 million to upgrade runways, lighting, and safety at local airports

The grants were awarded through a competitive process focused on "safety-first" projects

The Sherrill Administration is clearing the runway for better travel and business across the Garden State, announcing more than $7.3 million in funding to modernize 11 local airports across nine counties.

The fiscal year 2026 Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants include $6.5 million in state funds and $800,000 in federal matching funds. These investments are designed to ensure New Jersey’s general aviation network remains a safe and reliable economic engine.

The grants were awarded through a competitive process focused on “safety-first” projects. This year’s funding will support several critical infrastructure needs — including lighting upgrades, capital improvements, comprehensive airport planning, and rehabilitation of existing equipment.

The state is providing 90% of the eligible project costs through the NJDOT Transportation Trust Fund and Airport Safety Fund, with local airport owners covering the remaining 10%.

“General aviation airports serve as key economic engines for local communities,” said NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain. “These grants provide funding to make safety improvements and ensure they are well-maintained for businesses, residents, and visitors.”

Over the past five years, New Jersey has aggressively invested in aeronautics infrastructure — totaling $75 million when combining state, federal, and local contributions.

These smaller general aviation airports are vital for corporate travel, emergency services, and flight training. They help divert traffic from major hubs like Newark Liberty International Airport while providing more direct access to New Jersey’s diverse business corridors.
