A tractor‑trailer driver was rescued and taken to the hospital after a truck slammed into a commercial building near Route 3 in Clifton early this morning, leaving the vehicle embedded in the structure for hours.
Fire officials said crews had to enter the building to extricate the driver, who was conscious and talking during the rescue and was later taken to the hospital for evaluation, according to the deputy fire chief.
The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at a building that houses Toptown Limo Ride, located just feet from a Route 3 ramp near the intersection of Ward Street and Kensington Avenue.
A person on the second floor of the building was also rescued using a ladder, officials said.
The tractor‑trailer, which has a USA Truck logo, remains smashed into the building as crews continue stabilization and removal efforts.
The front cab of the truck went into the building, with debris hanging inside and wires visible at the scene.
Officials said the truck struck gas and electric service lines, prompting a rapid response from PSE&G to shut off utilities.
Investigators from police and fire departments are working to determine how the crash happened while assessing potential hazards.
Very little information has been released about injuries as crews continue working the scene.
Officials said the tractor‑trailer was hauling dog food at the time of the crash.
