Fire officials in Bridgeport are trying to determine what caused a mid-day blaze in the 1600 hundred block of East Main Street that sent one person to the hospital and displaced more than a dozen people.

Firefighters responded to the intersection of Boston Avenue and East Main Street around 12:45 p.m. for the multialarm fire.

Two buildings caught fire: One a multifamily home and the other a home with a business on its first floor.

Firefighters doused the flames for about an hour as a crowd of people watched from across the street.

Resident Steven Moore says he was lucky to make it out alive.

“I woke up and heard an explosion inside of the building," Moore says. "I go to open my door and a big plume of smoke hits me in the face. I just threw on my shoes, covered my face, and left the building."

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cody says one person was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

No firefighters were injured, but 14 adults, 2 children, and 2 cats were displaced.

The owner of the business involved didn’t want to speak on camera, but folks mentioned he had just gotten some extensive renovations done inside the business recently.

The American Red Cross is assisting those who were displaced.

“I just lost everything," Moore says. "It is what it is”

The Bridgeport Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
