A long-neglected property in Paterson has officially been transformed into the city’s newest public space on Jasper Street.

City officials unveiled Vista State Park this week - a new 6.4-acre park that features sweeping views of both Paterson and the New York City skyline. The space also features a playground, outdoor fitness area and walking space and more - just steps from the Great Falls.

Residents who visited the park on Sunday said the new space is already making an impression.

“It has a West New York feel to it. It looks upscale, so I like it,” one resident said.

Others say the park offers something the city has been missing.

“Paterson doesn’t really have a lot of nice places to go to, so I think this is a really well put together project for the community,” the resident added.

Mayor André Sayegh says the area was once abandoned and known as a dumping ground but has now been reimagined into a recreational space for families and residents to enjoy.

Officials say it is the largest open public space the city has opened in decades.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection purchased the property in 2016 and developed it through a partnership with the city. Officials will oversee maintenance and operations moving forward.

City leaders say the goal of the project is not only to create green space, but to improve quality of life for residents across Paterson.
