A Memorial Day ceremony moved indoors in Mount Vernon after rain canceled the city’s parade.

Residents gathered inside City Hall to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country.

The cold and rainy weather brought attendees together inside the chambers. Girl Scouts from Troop 1640, the Mount Vernon Police Honor Guard and veterans from multiple eras took part in the ceremony.

The room joined together to sing the national anthem.

Outside, a three-volley salute was held and Taps was played.

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard spoke about the meaning of the day. “Memorial Day has to be more than about a cookout,” she said. “We are remembering the freedoms that we enjoy in this country.”
