As temperatures climbed into the 90s Friday, commuters in Hunts Point searched for ways to stay cool while traveling across the city.

Many riders packed subway platforms throughout the morning, eager to board air-conditioned trains and escape the heat. However, long waits and crowded train cars can make an already uncomfortable commute even more challenging during extreme temperatures.

Ralph, a commuter heading out on a short trip, said he was hoping to avoid a packed train.

"It's pretty hot, but as long as the train is cool, I'm good," he said.

Ralph said he rushed out of his home and forgot to bring water with him. When asked what he would do if his train car did not have air conditioning, he shrugged it off.

"Then I'll find another car. What am I gonna do?" he asked.

Fortunately for Ralph, the train that arrived at the station had working air conditioning.

As the heat wave continues, officials are encouraging residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors when possible and take advantage of cooling centers operating across the city.
