Crown Heights residents raise concerns over illegal parking

Along a busy stretch of Eastern Parkway, several vehicles are seen parked beneath a “No Standing” sign - something some neighbors say reflects an ongoing parking struggle in the area.

One resident, Emma, says the situation hasn’t stood out as unusual given how limited parking can be along the corridor.

“I didn't see it as a problem, because to get parking on Eastern Parkway is very difficult,” she said.

But others in the neighborhood say the issue goes beyond parking convenience.

Neighbors claim unmarked vans have been sitting in the same spot for months, partially blocking a crosswalk and making it harder for pedestrians to safely see oncoming traffic.

“They've been there for a few months now. I think it affects visibility when you're crossing the street, so I can't always tell if there are cars coming - I have to step out to see the traffic,” said resident Cheyenne Cage.

An MTA vehicle was also observed in the no-standing zone. Neighbors say that despite 17 closed 311 complaints since May, the situation has not improved.

Howard, another resident, says reporting the issue hasn’t led to meaningful change and has instead added to confusion over which agency is responsible.

“The 311 reports I believe just go to the NYPD who then come and then then take a look and there's nothing they can really do. It's creating a dangerous situation. During rush hour, like there's just a big pile up because cars have to avoid the cars that are parked there,” he said.

He added that frustration has grown as residents feel stuck between multiple agencies without a clear fix.

“There’s like city agencies or city and state agencies are kind of clashing, and we're unable to move forward and resolve the situation and make sure that cars can pass freely and make it a safer intersection over there,” Howard said.

Residents say they’re now calling for a stronger response from the city to address the ongoing concerns.

An MTA spokesperson tells News 12 that they are actively looking into the community concerns.
