Democratic voters in Greenburgh headed to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to stick with a familiar leader or chart a new course for the town’s future.
The primary pits longtime Town Supervisor Paul Feiner against challenger Barry McGoey, in what many observers consider Feiner’s strongest challenge in decades.
Feiner first took office in 1991 and has led Greenburgh for 35 years. Despite his lengthy tenure, he has continued to cultivate a reputation as an independent voice and political maverick.
McGoey, a firefighter and attorney, has built his campaign around bringing new leadership to Town Hall. He also enters the race with support from many within the Democratic Party establishment in Westchester County.
Voters said they understood the significance of the election.
“I think that every election is important. Primaries are especially important. We need to make sure that the right candidate is selected for the November elections,” said Greenburgh resident Joan Balkcom. “I think things are going well in Greenburgh. I’ve been here for over ten years, and I am very happy with the way things are going so far.”
While Tuesday’s contest is technically a primary, it is widely viewed as the decisive election in the race. The winner is not expected to face a significant challenge in November, making the Democratic primary the likely determining factor in who will lead Greenburgh for the next term.
The results will reveal whether Democratic voters prefer the experience and familiarity of Feiner’s long tenure or McGoey’s call for a fresh start.
