A utility pole was seen sparking after being struck on Blondell Avenue in Westchester Square early Monday morning.

Surveillance video from one of the businesses along Blondell Avenue shows a tractor-trailer coming down the road just after 3 a.m. It appears to have hit the pole, causing sparks to fly and bringing down power lines. It is now a safety concern for residents.

When News 12 arrived at the scene around 9:30 a.m. Monday, Con Ed crews were there.

Yellow caution tape blocked off a portion of Blondell Avenue and Halperin Avenue as Con Ed crews worked to make the necessary repairs.

The area where the utility pole was struck has several businesses and homes.

While on the scene, News 12 spoke to a few people who shared their worry about the downed lines.

"It was really a concern and there was no real response for like four hours. Literally from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. to get help for the situation. So it really caused a lot of distress and anxiety," shared one woman.

In order to repair the utility pole, a spokesperson with Con Ed said power was shut off to roughly 82 customers in the area.

Kumar Jagindhrall, the owner of Blondell Auto Collision Center, said the tilted utility pole negatively impacted his business's bottom line.

"All the workers showed up this morning, and then we run into this problem. So, you know, we have to close down for the day and the business generates a lot of, you know. A lot of customers called in disappointed this morning to pick up their cars and things like that," said Jagindhrall.

Con Ed said they hope to have a new utility pole up and power restored by Monday evening.
