Communities across the Hudson Valley spent Independence Day celebrating America's 250th birthday with a variety of events and activities — from early morning workouts to boat parades and family festivals.
The day began in Mahopac with the second annual Putnam County Classic "Race the Lake," where participants made their way around Lake Mahopac as part of the holiday celebration. Later in the morning, Training for Warriors Mahopac hosted its third annual "Fourth of July Firecracker" workout, which drew dozens of participants dressed in red, white and blue. The event featured a high-energy fitness session and a DJ to kick off the holiday.
"We like to do this every holiday, one big workout. We get the whole crew together," said Vincent Valenti, owner of Training for Warriors Mahopac. "Nobody's working, we get the workout in in the morning, and then you can go celebrate and do what you want to do on your holiday on your day off."
Families also gathered at the Peekskill waterfront for a Fourth of July festival. The event featured live music, food and opportunities to learn about the city's role in the American Revolution.
"I like to say if you know somebody from the Revolutionary War, they were here in Peekskill or they wrote about it," said Tim Warn, a trustee with the Peekskill Museum.
Organizers highlighted Peekskill's revolutionary history while visitors enjoyed family-friendly entertainment along the riverfront.
