Summer is the perfect time to get outside and stay active, but a local doctor says proper preparation can help prevent injuries.
Dr. Michael Schwartz of White Plains Hospital joined News 12 to discuss how people can safely enjoy activities like biking, swimming, basketball and volleyball.
Schwartz said one of the most important steps is taking time to warm up before exercising.
He recommends a 10-minute warmup and stretching session, along with staying hydrated and knowing your physical limits.
The doctor said staying active throughout the summer can also help prepare the body for more strenuous activities.
As for injuries, Schwartz says he’s seeing a wide range depending on the sport.
Pickleball and tennis players are dealing with ankle sprains, rotator cuff injuries and tennis elbow.
Golfers are experiencing elbow and knee injuries, while basketball and soccer players are suffering everything from Achilles injuries to ACL and meniscus tears.
If an injury does occur, Schwartz recommends following the RICE method — rest, ice, compression and elevation.
He says ice and elevation are especially important early on to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications may also help if appropriate.
For parents and athletes, Schwartz says it’s important not to ignore lingering symptoms.
If an injury is not improving after a few days or is causing significant swelling, he recommends seeking medical attention for further evaluation, imaging and treatment.
