A member of the Poughkeepsie Common Council is facing multiple felony charges following an alleged domestic incident.
Christopher Grant, who represents the city's 6th Ward, was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree strangulation and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, according to the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office.
Grant, 38, also faces misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree assault.
Prosecutors say the charges stem from an incident that occurred Aug. 1 in the Town of Poughkeepsie after the Hudson Valley Caribbean Festival at Waryas Park.
Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers issued a statement following the arrest. "I am aware of the criminal charges filed against Councilmember Christopher Grant," Flowers said. "The allegations are deeply concerning and the conduct described has no place in our community or among those entrusted with public service. Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects far too many individuals and families, and it should never be tolerated."
Flowers added that residents "deserve public officials who conduct themselves with integrity and uphold the trust placed in them by the community in which they serve."
