The New York City Health Department has detected their first human West Nile virus case of 2026.

Health officials say the person contacted the illness after spending time outdoors in locations both inside and outside of the city. Their current condition or place of residence was not specified.

There have been 222 human West Nile virus cases reported nationally this year so far.

The illness is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes carrying it are present in the city each year from June through October.

The health department says they have intensified mosquito surveillance and expanded virus control efforts.

Officials remind city residents to take precautions and avoid mosquitos.
