A new playground and splash pad are coming to Central Nyack after Clarkstown officials and community members gathered Tuesday to break ground on the project.
The playground will be built on the site of two former residential properties acquired by the town to create space for the park.
One of those homes, located at 49 Waldron Ave., is expected to be demolished in the coming weeks.
The new playground will be located across from the town's community center and will become the first municipal playground in Central Nyack.
For residents like Naudia, the project is a long-awaited addition to the neighborhood.
"There's no gathering space for us to actually meet the neighbors, meet the other kids," said Naudia, a Central Nyack resident. "We're really excited to just meet everyone else."
The park will be named after former New York State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, who secured a $1 million grant for the project during his final term in office.
He was a state lawmaker for 17 years.
"At the end of the day, when the book is written on consequential legislators from Rockland County throughout its history, Ken Zebrowski will literally be in that top portion with Gene Levy and Tom Morahan," said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann.
Zebrowski was there with his family to break ground.
"So to come back here and still see some of the things I collaborated with, with people, come to fruition, is awesome," Zebrowski said. "I think this will be a great new addition."
In addition to the state grant, Clarkstown plans to contribute another $200,000 toward the project.
Town officials expect the playground and splash pad to be completed in the spring of 2027.
