Ghosts in the kitchen? Newburgh brewery owner shares eerie security footage

A white shape and items that appear to change places have employees wondering whether their historic workplace is haunted.

Something strange is brewing at Newburgh Brewing Company — and it’s not on tap.

Owner Paul Halayko says his kitchen security camera has captured things he can’t explain — from a white shape that appears to turn into a face to items that seem to change places when no one is inside.

“Kind of like a grimaced mouth right here,” he said while pointing out the white shape. “Very creepy with the teeth, definitely see two eyes.”

The footage dates to February 2024, after Halayko installed a motion-activated camera in the kitchen.

He says two other recordings captured flashes of light about 47 minutes apart overnight, when no one was inside. Comparing the images, he points to pots, a garbage pail, a tray and knives that appear to have moved or disappeared from view. The recordings do not show those items moving.

“We’ve got two knives right there in the middle on the knife rack,” he said. “Now let’s go to the next photo — they are gone.”

Halayko showed News 12 the footage during an exclusive walkthrough of the brewery on South Colden Street, explaining where the images were captured and describing the building’s industrial past. The building dates to the 1850s. Before becoming a brewery, it housed a steam engine operation, a yarn factory and the Newburgh Paper Box Company.

Halayko says he consulted the city historian, who found no recorded fatal accidents in the building. He says she noted that industrial work could be dangerous and that incidents may have gone undocumented. That history does not establish an explanation for the images.

Halayko also says a brewery worker has reported seeing a man in overalls on several occasions downstairs in the production area. According to Halayko, the worker described the encounters as positive.

He recently shared the kitchen footage online to see what others thought and says the response has been huge. While he has no definitive explanation, he isn’t ruling out the possibility of something paranormal.

“I’d be crazy to say it’s not possible,” he said, “because there are many things in this world that we don’t understand.”
