Good morning, Long Island, and happy Election Day! If you're heading out to the polls today, Mother Nature is giving us a beautiful day to get out and vote. We may have a little patchy fog early this morning, so allow some extra travel time if you encounter reduced visibility. Otherwise, we're looking at mostly sunny skies with just a few passing clouds throughout the day. Temperatures will climb between 65 and 70 degrees, well above our typical average high of 58 degrees for early November. Whether you're heading to your polling location, taking a walk, enjoying some fall foliage or getting some outdoor work done, the weather will certainly cooperate. No umbrellas needed for Election Day, and you'll be able to leave the heavier jackets at home this afternoon. Just remember to get out and make your voice heard at the polls!

Long Island Today forecast
Long Island tonight forecast

For tonight, we'll continue our stretch of quiet and comfortable November weather. Mostly clear skies will allow temperatures to drop into the upper 40s and lower 50s by Wednesday morning. Wednesday is shaping up to be another beautiful day across Long Island, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the upper 60s and lower 70s. That's more than 10 degrees above normal for this time of year! It will feel more like early October than November, and our dry weather pattern continues. Wednesday looks fantastic for outdoor sports, fall cleanup, walking the dog or simply spending some time outside enjoying the sunshine and unusually mild temperatures.

Long Island tomorrow forecast

As we head into Thursday, we'll begin to notice some changes in our weather pattern. The morning should start off with some sunshine and another round of mild temperatures, but clouds will gradually increase throughout the afternoon as our next storm system approaches. A few showers could develop late in the day, especially toward the evening hours, but much of Thursday should remain dry. High temperatures will once again reach the upper 60s and lower 70s. If you have outdoor plans or yard work to finish, Thursday morning and early afternoon look like your best opportunities before the rain chances begin to increase. It's also a good idea to clear leaves from storm drains and gutters ahead of the wetter weather expected Friday.

Friday looks to be the most unsettled day of the week as a storm system and cold front move across Long Island. We'll see periods of showers, and some of those showers could produce locally heavy downpours. There's even a slight chance of a thunderstorm as the cold front pushes through the region. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs generally between 65 and 70 degrees, but you'll definitely want to keep the umbrella handy. Some heavier rain could lead to ponding on roadways and slower travel during the morning or evening commute. We'll also be keeping an eye on the potential for some gusty winds as the system moves through. The good news is that this doesn't look like a washout for the entire weekend, as improving conditions should follow the cold front.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we may still have a leftover shower or two Saturday morning as the storm system pulls away from Long Island. However, we'll gradually dry things out as Saturday progresses, with some breaks of sunshine possible during the afternoon. Sunday is looking like the better of the two weekend days, with a mixture of sunshine and clouds and mainly dry conditions. Overall, most of the weekend should be dry, which is great news for youth sports, outdoor activities, fall festivals and anyone trying to finish up some yard work before colder weather arrives. Temperatures may turn a little cooler behind the cold front, bringing back a more typical November feel. One other reminder: With daylight saving time now over, the sun is setting before 5 p.m., so plan your outdoor activities accordingly and be extra careful during the darker evening commute. Enjoy the beautiful Election Day weather and our unusually warm stretch of November sunshine before the rain arrives late in the week!
