At least six people were injured, and a dozen apartments were damaged by fire overnight in White Plains.
Fire officials say they got a call about flames at the Half Moon Apartments at 11 Lake St. around midnight.
Fire officials say they thought they contained the flames to the second floor. It soon became apparent that the fire was in the walls and spread throughout the seven-story building.
"The fire had extended through a steam pipe chase up to a sixth-floor apartment," says White Plains Deputy Fire Chief Brian Hickey.
Jose Pagan lives on the first floor. He says the fire started right above his apartment and he had to get his mother out of the building. His neighbor and their pet didn't have it so easy.
"The lady from the second floor, they couldn't get out because there was a lot of smoke in the hallway," he said.
Pagan said the neighbor and her dog had to jump out a window and were aided by police officers.
More than 12 apartments had significant damage. Red Cross officials estimate 20 people are now displaced. Some residents have been taken to the Youth Bureau until longer term housing can be arranged.
Residents on the opposite side of the building have been allowed to reenter their homes.
Six people were taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation, but all are expected to be OK. No firefighters were injured.
There was no word yet on a cause, but investigators say it doesn't look suspicious.
