Stamford police and the community are reacting to the death of a beloved 66-year-old Stamford woman who was hit by a pickup truck and killed Saturday afternoon.

It happened at the intersection of Strawberry Hill Avenue and Colonial Road.

Police have identified the woman as Stamford resident, Evelyn Aponte.

They and people who live in the city have confirmed that she worked at a local CVS in the city.

"She was a very sweet lady," said Jenny Castellano from Stamford.

People in Stamford are reacting to the death of Aponte, who was in this crosswalk on Colonial Road when she was hit and killed Saturday afternoon.

"I was heartbroken. I had chills all over my body you know I was like how? I just literally gave her a ride home three weeks ago," said Castellano.

"She's been in the community for years," said SGT Jeffrey Booth with Stamford Police.

Police say a 50-year-old Stamford resident was driving a 2014 Toyota pickup truck south on Strawberry Hill Avenue and was turning left onto Colonial Road when the woman was hit.

"There's several laws that protect pedestrians more than they protect drivers in these kinds of situations," said Booth.

Police say the pickup truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

"Very sad about this. It's very sad news. I think we're all heartbroken and I think when everybody finds out that she's gone a lot of people are going to come out and help," said Castellano.

Police say no arrests have been made.

They continue their investigation and ask anyone with information please contact the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad at (203) 977-4712.
