A 79-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after a shooting in University Heights, according to police.
Investigators say the shooting happened around 1:23 p.m. near West 183rd Street and University Avenue.
Video from the scene showed officers assisting the woman as she lay on the ground awaiting medical treatment. Witnesses told News 12 they believed she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
One witness said the 26-year-old man was sitting outside a building on West 183rd Street when two men approached and opened fire, striking him in the leg. The witness said the man then returned fire.
Police said the woman was struck in the leg by a bullet during the incident. Both victims were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive.
The shooting happened just steps away from a school and in the middle of the afternoon, raising concerns among residents about gun violence in the neighborhood. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as shots rang out and people scrambled for safety.
Two sections of West 183rd Street were cordoned off with police tape as investigators searched for evidence. Numerous shell casings could be seen on the sidewalk.
No arrests have been made, and police have not released information about possible suspects. The investigation remains ongoing.
