Experts say Wednesday afternoon is expected to be the busiest time of the week for road travel, so it’s best to leave before noon. Rodney McLane, a taxi driver in the New York City metro area for 21 years, agrees.
“I expect a lot of traffic and streets being very crowded,” he said. “Definitely leave the house a little early to get to where you’re going on time.”
Traveling on Thanksgiving Day isn’t expected to be as crazy, but returning home could be difficult. Experts say Sunday will be the worst day for traffic, so drivers are encouraged to hit the roads sooner.
At the pump, drivers can expect to pay about the same as last year, when the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.06 on Thanksgiving Day.
The national average this year is $3.04, but the Hudson Valley is seeing higher prices:
Westchester County: $3.30
Rockland County: $3.29
Putnam County: $3.16
Dutchess County: $3.14
Orange County: $3.07
