Air quality in the Hudson Valley is being affected by pollution that travels hundreds of miles, according to the American Lung Association, prompting renewed calls for action from health advocates.
Michael Seilback of the American Lung Association says pollution from coal‑fired power plants in the Midwest does not stay confined to where it is produced.
“We also get air pollution from the Midwest coal‑fired power plants that are out in the middle of the country,” Seilback said. “Their air pollution comes across the country and settles in our region.”
Experts say the situation underscores how air quality in the Hudson Valley is influenced by both local sources and pollution drifting in from other parts of the country.
Advocates are calling the current conditions an “all hands on deck” moment and are urging residents and state leaders to cut back on pollution wherever possible.
