More than 100 first responders stood in the rain Thursday in Newburgh to honor a fallen officer killed last week in a snowmobile crash.
The funeral for Detective DJ Romano was held at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh.
Romano was 32 years old when his snowmobile hit a tree Friday night in Herkimer County.
Chief Bruce Campbell says Romano was just named officer of the month in December.
He worked for the department almost 3 1/2 years.
Romano leaves behind a wife and two daughters.
He lived all his life in Newburgh, and friends say he was a great athlete. They say it was one of his goals to become a detective. He was posthumously promoted.
Romano's fellow officers also promised they will always be there for his family.
A GoFundMe for Romano's family set up by his brother has raised nearly $250,000.
