An alert police officer is being credited for saving a family’s home from fire in Rockland County.
Ramapo police say an officer was on his way to an unrelated call for service around 10 p.m., when he discovered a house engulfed in flames at 25 Trinity Ave. in the Hillcrest section of town.
The officer immediately notified dispatch who relayed the information to county headquarters.
Within minutes, Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 arrived on scene and extinguished the fire with the help of firefighters from Monsey and Spring Valley Fire Department.
Family members inside the home say they were awoken by a driver outside honking their horn. When they went outside to see what was going on, they say they noticed flames shooting from the electrical meter box, spreading fast along the outside garage wall.
Firefighters say they put the fire out in about a half hour. Rockland's Emergency Services Coordinator Chris Kear tells News 12 there the fire did not extend into the house, but the home did suffer extensive smoke and water damage. No injuries have been reported.
There is no word yet on the exact cause yet, but fire officials say it does not appear suspicious.
The family had to find another place to spend the night. There is also no indication when they will be able to stay in their home again.
