The American Sugar Refining, ASR, facility in Yonkers will be closing at the end of this year.
The owner of the Yonkers refinery released a statement to confirm that the 130-year-old facility would close by Dec, 31, 2025.
The statement said in part, "We have a wonderful, skilled team of employees, and we are committed to providing robust support to them during this transition through job placement assistance, relocation to other ASR facilities and further resources. We have been proud to be a member of the Yonkers community."
American Sugar Refinery says there are 300 employees. Yonkers city officials say 92 are Yonkers residents. It says the refinery has been operating since the 1800s and has many challenges. ASR says it will also be closing as part of its strategy and investments in its northeast facilities.
Michael Filippou has been an operating engineer at the Yonkers Refinery for the last four years.
“I’m going to miss my coworkers and my people,” he says. “Some people were devastated. Some people they worked all their life here and they don’t know nothing else except making sugar.”
The facility has been a sugar refinery for more than 130 years. Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano say it’s been the Domino Sugar Refinery for over two decades.
“It's hard when anybody loses a company a size of this to lose jobs, but Yonkers is a booming city,” says Lenny Caro, president of the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce. “We’ll have some great opportunities here in Yonkers right now to create jobs. No company right now is going to replace 300 jobs, but we’ll work hard to put it together.”
The facility processes more than 4 million pounds of sugar per day and produces 18 premium products on eight packaging lines.
Many say the Yonkers Refinery had a big impact on Yonkers and it’ll be missed.
“A surprise for one thing. The Domino workers, they are regulars,” says Vic Masciandaro, manager of The Pizza Place.
“We’re known for Domino being here. It’s an established thing that’s been here my entire life so it’s kind of crazy,” says AJ Chiarelle, with the Yonkers Brewing Company.
