Animal protection organizations are asking animal lovers to take extra care of their pets during Fourth of July celebrations.
It's key to make sure backyard gates are secured, pets have their tags, and that they remain leashed if they must attend firework displays.
Experts say the loud noises and bright lights can be very alarming for animals.
"Well, no one wants to see their pets frightened, so the best thing to do is protect your pets," says animal rights activist Jean Shafiroff. "Keep your pets home, keep them in a room where they will be safe and where they will not hear the loud noise."
Officials say the risk of runaway pets spikes by 30% this time of year as firework displays become common.
