A man accused of killing a 29-year-old Ellenville woman is now in custody after authorities say he fled the state and was tracked down in Florida.

New York State Police say 28-year-old Michael David Carman of Westbrookville has been charged with murder in connection to the death of Nicole Izabella Perez.

Family members tell News 12 the two were in a relationship.

Perez was found dead inside her apartment on Clinton Avenue on March 30 after Ellenville Police conducted a welfare check. The case was later determined to be a homicide, and State Police took over the investigation

Investigators say Carman fled New York following the incident. He was located in Clay County, Florida, with the help of multiple law enforcement agencies and taken into custody as a fugitive from justice.

Carman was extradited back to New York on April 13 and is now being held in the Ulster County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Ulster County Court.

Authorities have not released a cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.

Perez leaves behind two children, ages 6 and 9, who family members say were with their father at the time of her death. Loved ones describe Perez as a loving mother with a "big heart" who always showed up for her family.
