The Mount Vernon Animal Shelter is possibly one step closer to reopening.
Assemblyman Gary Pretlow announced $1 million in state funding from the state budget to help the shelter.
The city is now considering whether to renovate the building or tear it down and rebuild.
As News 12 has reported, the shelter has been in bad shape for decades and has numerous structural violations.
Mt. Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard closed the facility in January.
The city currently pays the Humane Society of Westchester to handle its shelter services.
