Bad weather sinks revenues for Jersey Shore charter companies amid prolonged storm

Larger charter vessels are built to withstand rough waters but conditions have become far too unsafe for passengers and customers.

A prolonged stretch of rough seas and heavy winds is dealing a devastating economic blow to the Jersey Shore, stranding charter boat captains and threatening local beaches during one of the most lucrative times of the year.

Sustained northeast winds over the last five days have whipped up violent waters along the coastline, forcing dozens of charter boat cancellations straight through the upcoming weekend.

While larger charter vessels are built to withstand rough waters, conditions have become far too unsafe for passengers and customers.

For captains and business owners accustomed to busy early-fall fishing trips, weather delays of this length during prime season are nearly unheard of.

Beyond the economic toll, concerns are mounting over severe beach erosion along the Atlantic oceanfront.

With strong onshore winds expected to continue pushing water into back bays and against shoreline barriers, coastal communities are bracing for even higher tides and potential flooding through the weekend.
