A college student is in ICE custody, and Bard College officials along with the Ulster County executive are calling for his release.

Local leaders say Ali Faqirzada is a computer science major at the college.

He was recently detained by immigration authorities.

Officials say he fled Afghanistan to escape the Taliban and was granted special status as an asylum seeker.

Federal officials have not yet responded to requests for comment.
