The Bedford Central School District is making some new changes after school leaders say some students ignored COVID-19 safety protocols over the weekend.
The Fox Lane High School campus is now empty, but on Tuesday afternoon there were a number of school buses and a lot of cars with students heading home.
There are concerns that some of those students could have been exposed to coronavirus at large parties that took place this weekend.
The school district sent out a letter to parents letting them know that large groups of high school students attended gatherings this weekend and weren't social distancing or wearing masks. The students who've been identified must now learn remotely for at least two weeks and cannot return without a doctor's note.
Town officials say one party was in Pound Ridge, and that local authorities broke up the gatherings and provided the school district with a list of students who attended.
Those students started remote learning Tuesday and will be out of school for a minimum of 14 days until a doctor provides them with a letter saying they can return to school.
While the school district has not disclosed the number of students at the gatherings, Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick says they exceeded the state's limit of 50 people.
There are no confirmed cases stemming from the parties as of now, but Burdick says they have to act fast to prevent clusters like ones in Rockland and Orange counties.
The school district says it only has the list of names given to them by local law enforcement and that it is trusting additional students who attended the parties to identify themselves and learn remotely for two weeks.
Officials say last week a number of high school students were told to quarantine after an individual at school tested positive - and if any of those students attended the parties, the Westchester Department of Health and law enforcement may take action.
