Avid bike riders and outdoors lovers wait all year for Bicycle Sundays, and they were back Sunday for the 48th year at the Bronx River Parkway in White Plains.

From May 1 through October, the Bronx River Parkway is closed between Yonkers and White Plains from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

This is the first time that the Westchester Parks Foundation have extended the program through October.

Avid bicycle riders couldn't be happier.

"This is my first time doing it in a long time, so I'm just going to go where the road takes me," said Amanda Bailey, of White Plains.

Members of the Yonkers Bike Club were some of the first on the road.

"A whole bunch of us showed up, you'll see them coming down the road. We're getting ready for the Tour-De-Yonkers," said Bill Dennison, of Yonkers.

And there were many different reasons why people love Bicycle Sundays.

"It's free. It allows you to be free," said Winston Peddie, of Bronxville.

"It's a good way to get your anxiety under ease," said West Harrison resident Polly Gardner.

Daniel Gnoutcheff biked all the way from Rockland County just to participate.

"So this is a recumbent tadpole trike, it's pretty much a lawn chair on wheels, very comfortable," he said, explaining the type of bicycle he was riding on.

The return of Bicycle Sundays is a sign that summer is right around the corner.
