Students at a Brownsville elementary school celebrated Black History Month by impersonating impactful Black figures during an annual live museum event on Wednesday.

Each February, the halls of Riverdale Avenue Community School turn into a live museum. Children from kindergarten to fifth grade embody some of their idols.

Those idols include Black historical figures, successful hip-hop artists and politicians.

The students also impersonate local leaders and business owners like Harlem-based fashion designer Ashlee Muhammad and the owners of the renowned Williamsburg restaurant Kokomo.

Some of the students had the opportunity to meet them in person during the event.

“You don't realize how you're actually inspiring the youth until you actually come and see it for yourself,” said Kokomo co-owner Ria Graham.

School officials say they hope to inspire children and remind them that Black history continues to be made every day.
