A brazen car thief was caught on camera stealing an idling car at the Valero gas station on Broadway in Newburgh.
The incident happened Thursday at the Valero gas station on Broadway around 1:30 a.m.
Video of the crime was given exclusively to News 12 by the convenience store clerk and shows the suspect walking in shortly after the victim parked his car in front and went inside.
The suspect is seen entering the store, walking around and putting on the hood of his sweatshirt before he’s seen on video taking off in the victim’s car. Sources tell News 12 that he hit several parked cars on Walsh’s Road before police caught up with him nearby on Lake Street.
The store clerk says the victim was in the restroom when his car was stolen.
“There’s a lot of thieves around here. It’s better to always lock your car,” says customer Maura Melgar.
News 12 reached out to City of Newburgh police for information but has not heard back.
Community members say they feel sorry for the victim.
“Terrible. You can’t trust anybody,” says Jim Thompson, of Wallkill. “It’s tough enough just with everyday stuff and next thing you have to worry about is your car.”
