A new program launched in the city gives principals in the Bronx and citywide the opportunity to have more control of their schools.
The Empowerment Program will allow principals to have greater freedom in setting school budgets, hiring staff and determining the overall direction of the school. In exchange, principals will have to sign performance contracts, holding them accountable for school performance and student achievement.
City and education officials call the program a win/win situation for both students and schools. They also say parents will have greater roles in effecting change. According to the mayor's office, more than 300 schools citywide will be given the chance to take part in the program.
